In roughly a dozen years of practice, Architect and Interior Designer Saket Shah, creative head at Spiro Designs, knows that when you go from concept to implementation, your best allies can be gut instinct, tons of research and synergy with the client’s expectations. Every MasterChef viewer has a personal favourite; for some, it is the preparation, for others it is the plating. My take on interior design is much like the diff erence between instant food and gourmet food or thali; the fi rst is short-lived and the second is deeply satiating. It has its fl ip side: one is – well instant, and the other needs oodles of preparation and a deep-rooted understanding of the ingredients, their origins and how they need to be ‘handled’. We take the same route to designing; the outcome is the same level of sumptuous taste. Let us take a look at how you - as someone who is looking to create a lovely interior for your home or offi ce - can convey your thoughts very clearly to the design professional. We always look for clues in your lifestyle and your typical day; do share all this with us frankly because it gives us an accurate inkling of what will go well and what won’t. Most design professionals have a questionnaire. Don’t be shy even of taking leaps of faith creativity and practicality are not always parallel; they often meet Clients often come to us with photographs; how else would they accurately convey their dreams and aspirations to us? I respect them for this; of course, it is our job to translate this into actuals but it never hurts to know that they do have something in mind The more complex the design, the more complex the teams would be. We have worked on projects where there were thirty agencies working in sync. It is fun to see how the client is sometimes overwhelmed by the insane activity on site, even fl ummoxed, but not to worry, complex teams and design do not always mean infl ated costs! Budget; remember, the very defi - nition of budget itself may vary. For example, should you spend lavishly on one room like the living room or artefacts or brands or should you distribute this amount evenly – this is something where your interior designer will suggest the best solution because heknows every side of it Don’t think too much about theme; we frequently work on spaces where the sheer diversity of the residents necessitates a design that does justice to each. We are currently working on a large interior where three generations live under the same roof. When the young boy wanted a superhero theme, we worked on it and used it as a metaphor instead of a direct infl uence. The patriarch of the family felt an attachment to classical elements so we worked on that Most important, in a world where quick fi x solutions are readily available, remember that a space which surrounds you, which you are intimate with, should be like the food you eat at home. It needs to be wholesome, digestible, easy on the eye, and still delicious enough to want more of it every week. If you think of interior design like this, the making will not only be fun but the ‘plating’ too will be rather fl avorful and tantalizing - this much I can promise! The Abstract sent by SPIRO DESIGNS for the symposium was appreciated, for their concept of the project and work they are carrying out with sustainability and eco-design concerns. SPIRO DESIGNS was invited for a detail presentation at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad for the same, which had few nationally renowned entrepreneurs and researchers presenting by its side. There is increasing realization now worldwide, for the need to focus on sustainable development of both the society as well as the economy. Even in India the gap between the socio-cultural change and the economic change are increasing everyday. The present methods and models of both the business and the economic progress are inadequate and new models are being explored for new directions and leapfrog solutions. The emergence of the social economy makes even more explicit the great pressure to develop innovations related to social demands. Social innovation is a process of change where new ideas emerge from a variety of actors directly involved in the problem to be solved: final users, grass roots technicians and entrepreneurs, local institutions and civil society organizations. (www.desis-network.org) The symposium invited design students, design educators and professional designers to present the process, the outcome and the learning’s from their recently completed class room project, research project and /or professional project undertaken in the area of social innovation and sustainability. The project should demonstrate design intervention and the proposed new directions that may have emerged. The interested student designers, designers and design educators may send/ submit an abstract of the project.
